Modernize Your Hyperion: What’s New in Oracle EPM Infrastructure

Monday, April 23 at 1:15-2:15pm

Hyperion EPM Fusion edition is a dramatic change under the covers. Corporations must consider more global approaches to infrastructure to maintain availability and performance while reducing footprint and cost. Technologies such as virtualization, cloud computing, software and a service, Appliances (Exalytics), and open source operating systems (Linux) are more commonplace. Join Oracle Ace Director Eric Helmer as he covers what’s new, what’s supported, and what options you have when implementing your EPM project.

Update on 11.1.2.2 – What you need to know!

•March 16, 2012 • 1 Comment

More on 11.1.2.2…

In my previous Rumor Mill post, I posted a few rumors I was hearing on 11.1.2.2.  I have come to learn a bit more – again, these are still future statements and assumptions, however the following should be in place in 11.1.2.2…

  • Ability to use Websphere  7.0.0.19+

This is very surprising, but I doubt it will have much impact.  I can’t imagine many clients will do this as they would have to pay for a WebSphere licenses when they can get a free-use license of WebLogic and that keeps everything in Oracle’s supportability back yard.

  • Supported Upgrade Path

Upgrade Paths from 9.3.3, 11.1.1.3 and 1.1.1.4  and Maintenance Paths from 11.1.2.0 and 1.1.2.1

  • Additional support

MS Office 2010 64-bit, FireFox 10.x , IE9

  • Smartview changes

Smartview will contain the latest patch that levels the playing field between smartview and the excel add in.  In addition, it will connect to Strategic Finance.  We are really seeing Smartview being the desktop delivery strategy for EPM.  Smartivew will also connect directly to products instead of being routed through the smartview provider.  As such there are a few new WEB containers introduced in HSF, HFM, and Financial Close Management.

  • Database Sharing

We can share the relational DB with other Fusion Apps and they also removed the requirement for setting Database’s NLS Length Semantics, which made a shared databases incompatible in some cases.

  • Elimination of Financial Reporting Print Server

Just as I suspected, this functionality has been moved to the Web and eliminates the Windows requirement for PDF generation

  • Dramatic GUI changes to HFM and Planning

No surprise here, Oracle is getting the EPM products consistent with the rest of the Fusion apps by recoding them using Application Development Framework (ADF).  This will ensure EPM and the rest of the Fusion apps have a consistent look and feel and functionality to them.

  • Compact Deployment

Oracle will be releasing a compact deployment option.  This will be a simple installation that is intended to be put on ONE server for a small DEV or Proof Of Concept instance.  In essence, it combines all the 15 separate java Web Apps into one java.exe container.  This is great to get up and running while you are provisioning your permanent servers to get projects started, however it should not be used for anything more than a temporary instance and not intended for anything permanent of production.  The nice thing is that the compact deployment instance wont need a lot of memory and will start up in about 5 minutes (as opposed to 20 minutes+) since it only has to start one java container.   You can even bypass the need to install the big-overhead Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) and use the embedded Weblogic HTTP server.

  • MSI Packages for Clients

A very welcome addition indeed. Since the desktop clients such as the FR studio, Essbase Studio, Smartview, and HFM/FDM clients all require users to have administrative access, deploying them in some organizations has traditionally been difficult for tight security shops. IT had to create packages (MSI’s) that would deploy to users automatically through some push out sentinel program. Oracle has been nice enough to give us these MSI’s – saving IT a lot of time.  My only question on this so far is if it detects a previous version and uninstalls/upgrades.  We will see.

  • Say goodbye to Business Rules

HBR has always been nestled within Essbase Administration Services.  Oracle is standardizing on Calc Manager from now on and will provide a nifty tool to automatically convert them for you.

  • Oracle Enterprise Manager control

No surprise here either.  Fusion applications are packaged with OEM.  OEM has traditionally been used to control and administer the Oracle Database.  We now see more proof that Oracle is expanding the use of OEM to be the one-stop place to administer Fusion applications. OEM will Monitor servers and services and analyze performance.  This may put a damper on some of the third party  tools being sold today to do this in a nice little interface.  What I like best about this, is it should give people the ability to start/stop/monitor EPM services without IT involvement or having to give access to the servers themselves.

  • HFM configuration has moved to the EPM system registry instead of the Windows system registry.

This was needed to be consistent with the rest of the suite.  This will allow us to configure HFM clusters on one machine without having to do it on all nodes.

  • E-delivery Improvements

Oracle has improved the software download and assemblies on edelivery by packaging them together by functionality and combining smaller files, reducing the download from 11.4 GB to 7.8.

  • Performance enhancements

  • enhanced the configuration tool to reduce config time by about half
  • reduced service startup time
  • packaged OPMN with Essbase so we don’t have to install OHS on the Essbase server anymore
  • Security operations improved by almost half
  • Other enhancements

  • It is now easier to configure a shared disk location for Life Cycle Management
  • We can enable Essbase SSL
  • We can easily change the HFS and FR RMI ports
  • Life Cycle Management Roles

  • Significant enhancements and simplification in Life Cycle Management (LCM), reducing the number of clicks.
  • Additional LCM security roles
  • LCM now creates artifacts on import.
  • LCM can now be used with ERPi, FR Annotations, Close Manager,

Finally – we can change the ADMIN user ID!  We are not stuck with “admin” as the administrator for this system anymore.  Good stuff as the admin ID sometimes conflicts with other admin IDs in external corporate directories.  Furthermore, we can now disable the native  “admin” user altogether and use an external corporate directory authenticated user as the administrator.

We will have 11.1.2.2 up in our LAB soon and will know more.  We will also be showcasing 11.1.2.2 on some upcomming  webinars and during this year’s Collaborate Confernece in Vegas.   We are offering a discount to register for Collaborate as well.

  • Best Practices for Migrating to 11.1.2.x

Gallup has graciously agreed to host the next Heartland Oracle User Group meeting in Omaha on March 14 – 15, 2012.

Session details will be available soon at http://heartlandoug.org/

Eric will also be covering the following at the OAUGNYC meeting this Friday:

  • Bracing for Impact: Preparing your IT department for Oracle Hyperion EPM

Location:  Crowne Plaza Secaucus-Meadowlands
2 Harmon Plaza
Secaucus, NJ 07094

Exalytics is GA

•February 28, 2012 • Leave a Comment

The facts are in:

The Exalytics machine will be a Sun Fire X4470 M2 server

Specs:

  • 3 rack unit
  • Solid State storage and Memory
  • 4 Intel Xenon E7-4800 with high speed interconnect between processors totaling 40 cores
  • 1 TB DDR memory
  • 2 Inifiband Ports to connect to Exadata
  • 2 10 BB/s Ethernet ports
  • 4 1 GB Ethernet Ports
  • RAID HBA and 3.6TBs of raw disk capacity.

Wat’s on the box:

Multiple Exalytics machines can easily be clustered together for load balancing and high availability, and of course Oracle wants you to consider hooking this up to an Exadata Machine (via Infiniband) for even more speed.

Price:  $135,000 and that’s not taking into consideration software licensing, service and maintenance SLAs.  You can see how total costs can skyrocket with all the additional licenses fees.

See Brendan Tierney’s Blog Post on what a potential total cost of ownership could be, you will be shocked on how fast things add up. Is this worth it?

My main question…  Where is Financial Reporting, Planning, etc? We need the rest of the EPM platform on here.   How is Oracle going to support things like EPMA, HFM, FDM, Strategic Fiance on this platform when many of these components are Windows only?

Again, I see this only for a few select customers.  It’s great if you use OBIEE against large Essbase data sets.

But with some of the stability issues I have been hearing with the Exadata, I would wait for some of the early adopters to shake this out.

The 11.1.2.2 Rumor Mill

•February 25, 2012 • Leave a Comment

The Rumor mill

11.1.2.2 is rumored to come out some time in early April.  This is in-line with the rest of the release schedules that Oracle has launched with this product.

Since the Oracle Acquisition, Oracle has launched 4 major releases…

Version Year
9.3 2007
11.1.1.1 2008
11.1.2.0 2010
11.1.2.1 2011
11.1.2.2 2012

Currently there are an estimated 6,000 Oracle EPM and BI customers

Themes in 11.1.2.2

  1. Integrated Planning
  2. Time to Value
  3. Speed of Business and Planning

One of the coolest new enhancements rumored is Hyperion Strategic Finance access within Smartview.  This is proof that Smartview continues to be the strategic direction for the End User Experience.  So Far Smartivew is our one-stop shop for MS office direct access to Essbase, Planning, HFM, OBIEE, and now HSF.  I expect to see more integration in future versions.

Also, we are seeing Oracle continue to add to the growing family of Built-in Planning Modules… getting bigger and getting more toward quick start apps.  Currently there are modules for CapEX, Workforce Force Planning, Public Sector etc.  Coming soon are additional enhancements and modules:

  • Predictive planning an crystal ball built in to planning
  • Project Financial Planning Module (Not a Project TRACKING module.. a project PLANNING module)
  • Health Care Starter Kit
  • PS&B
  • Balance Sheet Planning for Banks

Of course there are additional pushes for Exaylitics that enable some wiz bang things like Virtual Close, and very fast predictive planning.  However know these rumors about Exalytics before you get all excited:

  1. It is a SUN machine running Unix. (Not going to be fun for Windows shops)
  2. It will only support OBIEE and Essbase.  Planning and the reporting modules are not yet on this thing.
  3. No price or licensing information has been released so no one candetermine ROI at this point.
  4. This is not an Exadata, there is no internal Infiniband structure.  It will be just a big machine (1 TB of Mem) that will allow us to run pretty much all of Essbase and OBIEE in memory for fast performance using the Times Ten technology.

I see a very small customer set that Exalytics will be appropriate for.  And hearing all of the stability issues with the first releases of Exadata, I would wait for the early adopters to shake it out.

More New Features and Enhancements in 11.1.2:

  • ADF based UI based on Web 2.0 (fusion standard)  This is getting EPM more and more towards true Fusion by converting the Web Interface to Web 2.0.  This ensures that all the Fusion applications will have a similar look and feel.
  • Project Financial Planning
  • HSF Smartview integration
  • Decision Packages (Public Sector)
  • PSFT Commitment control integration
  • HPCM Micro Costing
  • Health Care Starter kit
  • Data Forms and Charts in one view
  • Work flow enhancements
  • Seamless Rolling Forecast setup and usage as part of the UI web forms.
  • Cell enhancements with Change History.  There will be an option to “show change history” that shows every change and who did it.
  • Bread Crumb Navigation… so we can easily how we got the screen we are on and an easier way to track back.

For the Project Financial Planning Module it will have three types of projects

  • Contract Project
  • Capital Project
  • Indirect Project (generic Capital or Expense project)

It will have integrated Workforce as well.

For FDM, I believe we will have full direct integration with JD Edwards now.  However I think we will still have to wait for full integration with EBS, SAP BW, etc.

From an Infrastructure perspective I am expecting the version will support Internet Explorer 9 and Oracle Database 12. I also assume will incorporate the new Smartview patch that levels the playing field between the Excel Add-in and Smartview.

I also heard rumors that the FR print server is going away at some point.  Apparently they are stealing the print server constructs from OBIEE so that PDF generation can happen without all the moving parts.  This is great news for Unix Shops as this has always been a windows-only component.  We will see if that makes 11.1.2.2

Eric is Speaking at Roadmap 360 training day in Dallas March 18th.

•February 22, 2011 • Leave a Comment

As the new co-chair for the Dallas Oracle Applications User Group, Business Intelligence Forum, I will be actively involved in setting up, coordinating, and planning the new direction of the DOUG BI Forum meetings.

The vision is a radical change from a monthly meeting format to a quarterly training day format.  We will be chancing the focus to giving our members what they want – good technical content that can help them day to day, while minimizing marketing fluff.

Each Quarterly training day will have a particular theme of that should be of interest to anyone involved in EPM/BI and would like to learn new important skills.

To get started, we will be opening the first quarterly meeting this year with “Road map 360”.  The theme is around what is new and what to expect in EPM 11.1.2 and 11.1.2.1.  the “360” components means that we are attacking it from both an IT/architectural AND and functional perceptive.

As I have posted before, version 11.1.2 is the biggest Architectural change I have seen with this product and there are many considerations when considering going to that version.  Therefore, I will be speaking on the I.T. Side of the road map.   For the functional side, Kelliann  Hoelscher will be talking about new features and functionality that you will want to consider in the 11.1.2.x suite.

Come by March 18th from 4-6 pm at the NEW Oracle Building in Las Colinas, Tx.  Come meet the new DOUG BI Forum leadership, and get a feel for it’s new direction and focus.  We welcome any input to make this the best regional Oracle user group experience in the nation. Plus… there will be refreshments, and that’s not too shabby.

Address: 6031  Connection  Drive,  Las Colinas, Tx. Room  #9072-‐907.  Open and free to anyone.
