Oracle Business Analytics Direction

•October 6, 2012 • Leave a Comment

During Open World, the common theme for the direction of Oracle Analytics is the following:

  1. Any Data, Any Source
  2. Full Range of Analytics
  3. Integrated Analytic Applications
  4. On Premise or on the cloud On mobile

How is Oracle going to do that?

OBIEE.  more sources – Mash up data, Cloud based services, spreadsheets as datasources.

Endeca. Leveraging the Endeca acquisition to bring unstructured data into an analytic situation. For example, you will be able to mine free text in databases.  Good for complaint centers, service centers, etc.  Having the ability to bring unstructured and structured data together and performing analytics.

Predictive analytics.  Historical and future predictive data.  Oracle R integration

Exploring and exploiting the capabilities of the Engineered systems.

Visualizations. High density visualizations.  Heat maps, sunburst, 3D rotation, drag/drop metrics.  Focus on Information interactivity through touch/gestures, swipes, drag etc.

BigData.  When asked “How much data do you need to have in order to be considered Big Data?”  I could never find an answer, but I do know that Oracle considers Facebook “Big Data” and they are roughly 80 Petabytes.

ADF.  Move all products eventually to the ADF common platform which will make the solution more agnostic to specific browsers and have integrated mobile support

Cloud.  Oracle Announced Hyperion Planning in the Cloud.  I’ll discuss more on that in a later post.

Open World update

Heading to San Fran already.  This week I will be attending Oracle ACE Director executive briefings at Oracle HQ – an event they do every year the week prior to Open World.  Although I’ll be under a non-disclosure agreement, I’ll try to share what I can.  It’s a great look into Oracle’s direction and strategic vision.

I invite all of you to come by the our booth this year.  Lots of fun giveaways and this year we will be providing complimentary ONE-ON-ONE meeting sessions with  experts, including myself. It’s a great opportunity to discuss any current issues you are having, as well as get a peek into what’s new in the new 11.1.2.2 version that might make your life a bit easier.   Sessions can include general advice, question and answers, or a demo of the latest version’s new features and functionality.  Need to know what it will take to upgrade?  Make an appointment today by going to the following link:

It’s about time… introduction to the .300 patch

•September 26, 2012 • 1 Comment

Recently Oracle announced the release of the .300 patch for 11.1.2.2.  This is an unique patch that is quite a bit different than patches we have traditionally seen.

Historically, patches to enterprise Oracle products such as the database have been done in releases – bulk patch sets that apply to all situations and address a wide variety of bugs or security vulnerabilities.

However, Hyperion patches to the EPM suite have traditionally been one-off very specific break-fix patches.  Normally, you would never apply patches just because they exist but only if a patch addresses a specific issue under an exact situation.  Hyperion only released bulk fixes along with major version releases.

The .300 patch is different.  Much different. This is the first time I have seen a suite-wide patch set released for this product.  My gut tells me that this will be the new methodology for Oracle to keep it more in line with how patch releases are done with their other products.

The .300 patch addresses many bug fixes in the 11.1.2.2 version.  A lot of these issues were a result of converting some products such as Planning and HFM to the new Oracle Fusion ADF language to make it more compatible with APIs and provide a more familiar look and feel. There are many fixes in this release that specifically address ADF issues.

As you know or may not know Oracle and their partners were not recommending HFM customers to upgrade to 11.1.2.2 because of the bugs associated with it.  Simple things, such as creating new HFM applications, had issues. Many of these issues were related to the ADF conversion and HFM’s total reliance on Microsoft IIS and DCOM technologies, which is foreign to the traditional Fusion model. The .300 patch addresses many of these issues which might make the 11.1.2.2 version a solid consideration for Planning and HFM shops alike.

The .300 patch touches the entire suite of products including

  • Smartview
  • Financial Quality Data Management (FDM)
  • Hyperion Financial Management (HFM)
  • Financial Close Management (FCM)
  • ERPi
  • Shared Services
  • Workspace
  • Strategic Finance

As a result, if you want to patch one component, you need to patch them all, as they are all a prerequisites to each other.

There are literally hundreds of fixes across all these products.  About 100 Planning fixes alone. Undeniably, this patch mandatory for all 11.1.2.2 implementations.

The totally shocking element to this is that there are actually NET NEW FUNCTIONALITY enhancements included in this path set – not just bug fixes.

Hyperion Planning has significant enhancements to:

  • Outline Load Utility
  • Approvals Dashboard
  • Rolling Forecast
  • Form Design
  • Editing the currency dimension from within the dimension editor
  • Runtime Prompts
  • Project Financial Planning and Public Sector module

Hyperion Financial Management also has some new enhancements to consider as well.  There are some enhancements to:

  • Adding custom dimensions to existing applications
  • Intercompany Transactions
  • Equity pickup accessibility from data forms, data grids, and Process Control module
  • Automation of tasks
  • Viewing member properties in the member selector
  • Copy Application utility (my favorite)
  • Ownership Management
  • Smartview

…Along with about 60 HFM bug fixes. Take a look at the patch readme’s for the list of all fixes.

Don’t underestimate the level of effort either.  It’s important to note that this is not a fully installable release, but a patch set that must be applied to the 11.1.2.2 base release.  There are even pre-requisites that are needed before you can install the patch set itself. Depending on the modules you have, it can be quite an effort.  Don’t be surprised if it takes a full day.  If you have ERPI or FCM, or are in a complicated highly available clustered environment, it could take a lot longer.

We have performed many of these patches on Unix and Windows and we certify.  Feel free to reach out if you are interested in laying down this patch.  Due to it’s complexity, I would recommend having a  certified Platinum partner install, test, and document the process for you.

Reply to this post with any experiences you have had with this patch!

Thanks to all!

If you are a member of the Oracle Developers Tools User Group (ODTUG) and find this blog and my webinars / presentations helpful, I would like to personally ask you for your vote for the ODTUG Hyperion SIG Board.

I welcome the opportunity to continue my work in the Hyperion user community by serving on the Hyperion SIG board of ODTUG. I have been a dedicated long-term member of ODTUG and the OAUG Hyperion SIG and have actively volunteered and participated in their activities related to the free and open exchange of information for the user community across the nation for over six years. If elected, I will bring to this position the knowledge I have gained in these leadership positions as well as the skills I have acquired in my decade of Hyperion experience as both a customer and a consultant. As an Oracle ACE Director, I will also bring key relationships within the community and within Oracle corporate to help make the ODTUG Hyperion SIG even better than it is today.

Please vote today.  Thank you!

Notes from the Developer Panel at KScope12

•June 25, 2012 • Leave a Comment

Some notes from the developer panel:

  • panel was getting interest in getting integration with Google Docs.
    • Not many people interested.
    • Afraid of company financial spredsheets outside company walls.
    • Some companies even firewalled out.
  • Support for Chrome
    • Looking at it.
    • Java script to ADF  for planning and HFM is helping that.  However still some work in the rest of the modules.  Probably two patch sets away from completing.

Audience Comments/Concerns:  Smartview versions compatibility confusion

Think of Smartview is an independent client.  You can upgrade Smartview and it will work against older Essbase, but will not have the classic Add-in functionality that is in 11.1.2.1.102 until you upgrade APS and Essbase to that relese.  Can upgrade Smartview client independently and it will work with older Essbase, but APS and Essbase needs to be upgraded to get the new features.

Oracle recommends that customer’s should always be on the latest Smartivew client, regardless of the server version.

At first APS was intended to be a common provider to all datasources (Essbase, Planning, HFM, OBIEE, etc)  However now the strategy is for each product to have their own provider services, instead of one global Provider.  APS is for Essbase mostly.  Planning, HFM, and HSF have tier own provider service to eliminate a middle man bottleneck.

Audience Comments/Concerns:  Oracle’s official versioning scheme.

Digit:

1st: Generation

2nd: Release number – not used much

3rd: Product patch set   – means all products released together

4th. Patch set update – a patch SET for a product component/fixes

5th. Individual – product specific fix

Kerberos is supported on all web based communication and smartview, no intentions for client at this time.

Audience Comments/Concerns:  Logs

Problem is getting access to logs because access to servers is needed in most cases. Functional people need to see logs, and IT is usually unwilling to give access to servers.

Logs today now contain a mixture of IT and functional errors. Oracle is looking into trying to separate IT related events and functional messages in separate areas and finding a way to serve functional logs without the need to get on the physical servers.  Also – the strategy going forward is highlight actionable items on the IT side and do more proactive event driven notification.

Audience Comments/Concerns:  Usage reports

Finding out who is doing what in Hyperion is sometimes tough to gather.   Admittedly, Oracle has gotten better with sorts of auditing, however Oracle received clear feedback during this session that administrators want more detailed usage reports.

Note:  No software is available yet, this is just an announcement.  I am hearing April 16th as the GA release date, which is still a bit earlier than expected. Stay Tuned…
